Morse Theory for Implicit Surface Modeling
نویسنده
چکیده
Morse theory describes the relationship between a function's critical points and the homotopy type of the function's domain. The theorems of Morse theory were developed speci cally for functions on a manifold. This work adapts these theorems for use with parameterized families of implicit surfaces in computer graphics. The result is a theoretical basis for the determination of the global topology of an implicit surface, and supports the interactive modeling of implicit surfaces by direct manipulation of a topologically-correct triangulated representation.

Contour-Based Polygonization of Regular Grid Terrain Data
Terrain visualization has been an interesting issue for graphics people for long, and there have been a lot of attempts in various ways for more e cient visualization. In most of the works the terrain data was considered as a triangular mesh as it is, or as an implicit surface in which the original shape(topology) of the terrain can be slightly changed. Recently, the Morse Theory, [1, 2], has b...

متن کاملImplicit Snakes: Active Constrained Implicit Models
Extended Abstract: We are exploring new techniques for active contour models (popularly known as “snakes”[1]) by combining active segmentation models with the constrained implicit surface model introduced by Savchenko, et al.[4] and reintroduced under the name of variational implicit surfaces as a modeling and shape morphing tool by Turk and O’Brien[5]. In related work, we pursued more efficien...
متن کاملComputational Topology for Shape Modeling
This paper expands the role of the new field of computational topology by surveying methods for incorporating connectedness in shape modeling. Two geometric representations in particular, recurrent models and implicit surfaces, can (often unpredictably) become connected or disconnected based on typical changes in modeling parameters. Two methodologies for controlling connectedness are identifie...
متن کاملImplementation Notes for Finding Critical Points of Polynomial Metaballs
This note formalisms quasi-Gaussian piecewise polynomial implicit surfaces, otherwise known as metaballs. We use this formalism to differentiate the implicit surface bump kernels, derive new kernel functions and to efficiently implement interval versions with a goal of easing the implementation of Morse theoretic determination of the topological type of a given implicit surface.
